Am 28. September 2022 hatten zehn Schüler*innen der 7. Klassen die Möglichkeit, die Umweltaktivistin Erin Brockovich im Rahmen des A1 Digital Summits 2022 zu treffen und mit ihr ins Gespräch zu kommen. Bei einem einstündigen Get-Together im wunderschönen MAK, moderiert von Nadja Bernhard (ORF), lernten junge Erwachsene aus ganz Österreich Erin Brockovich kennen, stellten viele interessante Fragen und wurden von ihr auf ihrem eigenen Weg bestärkt.
Auch 22 Jahre nach dem Oscar-gekrönten Film „Erin Brockovich“ mit Julia Roberts engagiert sich die US-Amerikanerin für die Umwelt. In den USA ist besonders die Qualität des Trinkwassers ein großes Thema für sie. Wie sie uns erzählte, gibt es in den USA Städte ohne Trinkwasser – das kann man sich in Österreich gar nicht vorstellen! Darüber hinaus engagiert sich Erin Brockovich im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel und ist unermüdlich damit beschäftigt, Informationen weiterzugeben und Bewusstsein zu schaffen. Sie tritt dafür ein, dass wir alle uns in unserem jeweils eigenen Lebensbereich für umweltpolitische Themen engagieren können und sollen. Ihre Botschaft: Veränderung beginnt bei uns selbst! “The only person who can change your life is the person you’re looking at when you look into the mirror.” Nicht umsonst heißt ihr neues Buch “Superman’s Not Coming”!
Nach einer Stunde endete unser lebhaftes und auch sehr herzliches Gespräch mit Gruppenfotos, freundlicher Verabschiedung und der Möglichkeit, Erins Buch (jede/r bekam ein Exemplar) von ihr signieren zu lassen. Meeting Erin Brokovich was not only a huge honor, but an inspiration to better the world. Going in with fairly high expectations, I was expecting to listen to her inspirational words for an hour, but to my surprise she took almost all the time she had to answer our questions very thoroughly. With her motto “Stick-to-it-iveness” she encouraged all of us to take that one little step to help our planet and to inspire other people to do the same. – Barbara A.
Meeting Erin Brockovich was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. She told us that she didn’t want to be seen as an American hero, because she is “just” a human, and that that’s all she is. 30 years after the trial she still fights for justice, and she said that we were the reason for that. She believes that we can still save the earth because there are people like us, that take their time to do something good. She is a powerful, impressive and strong woman. When we entered the event location, you could instantaneously see that it was a fancy event: There were drinks, little snacks and finger food, just like in a movie. Even though I didn’t ask Erin any questions myself, you could see from the answers she gave to other students that she was well prepared. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience, and I even got an autograph from Erin Brockovich herself. – Oliver L.
